Contemporary Anthropological Social Theory is meant as an introduction to the practice of ethnographic research, with its predominant focus on the issues of the writing of ethnography, the philosophy of science behind the practice of research, the reading and judging of an ethnography, and some of the basic theoretical principles behind ethnographic methods and ethics, and the setting up of ethnographic objects and projects.

Research Design aims to prepare students for the practical and epistemological complexities of conducting ethnographic fieldwork. The course centres on three-hour tutorials. In these tutorials issues related to formulating the main research questions, operationalisation, methodology, ethics and the organisation of each student’s research internship will be discussed. 

The Thesis Seminar aims to establish the analytical connection between, on the one hand, the fieldwork experiences and the data collected during fieldwork, and, on the other hand, the theories and epistemologies discussed in the first part of the Master's programme. The focus will be on the level of analysis, the units of analysis, and the process of constructing a written academic argument.
