Giulia Longhi: My year in Shandong
My year in China was very special because of the many trips I went on. Immersing myself so deeply in the culture I studied was such a wonderful experience, it felt like all the books, the papers and research I read (and myself did!) suddenly started to make sense. Other than that, my Chinese friends made my stay amazing, even if in certain times it wasn't all roses. During Christmas and New Year's, for example, I got homesick and missed my country. Thankfully, I found such special friends that, despite their non-belief in these days, celebrated them with me.
What did you do in Shandong?
In Shandong, I went to class every day and I followed language courses. There was also the opportunity to take up electives, such as Taiji Quan, HSK courses etc. Although the classes were very well organized and the professors extremely competent, I felt like the biggest improvement in my language skills is thanks to my local friends and because of the trips I made.

What did you learn from this experience?
I learnt a lot, especially in the area of personal development. Firstly, I learnt how to live with more spontaneity, which in the beginning clashed with my personality. Secondly, I think I became very adaptable to any social and cultural context, appreciating the characteristics that before I would have been reluctant about. Thirdly, I am not scared of trying anymore. This experience taught me that to achieve what I want - anything, even buying the smallest thing in the local shop - you have to speak Chinese, otherwise you will not get it. The principle is very simple, but the psychological change that it triggers is surprising.
Do you have any tips you would give prospective students with regards to the semester in Shandong?
A tip I would give to future students is actively looking for local friends. Many Chinese people can be a bit introverted when meeting foreign people, so students coming from Leiden should take the initiative. For example, by joining clubs or activities (sports such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, etc.) where you have the opportunity to meet Chinese students.
