People who can solve problems are urgently needed in an increasingly complex world. Leiden University is a breeding ground for such talented individuals. We help our students discover, develop and use their talents.
We encourage our bachelor’s and master’s student to get the best out of themselves. The University offers an attractive range of minors and electives. We also encourage or students to study abroad, and they can also take part in a research track. Extra talented and motivated students have the opportunity to deepen or broaden their programme as part of the Honours Programme.
Honours education
Ambitious and motivated school pupils and students (VWO, BA and MA) can deepen and broaden their knowledge and skills at the Honours Academy. Pupils in pre-university education can get to know academia in the Pre-University College, curious and ambitious bachelor’s students can participate in the Honours College, study at the Leiden University College, or follow an Honours Class. Master’s students can develop their leadership skills in the Leiden Leadership Programme or the International Leiden Leadership Programme.
International classroom
Regardless of whether graduates find work in Leiden, The Hague, Brussels, New York or Jakarta, in their professional and personal life they will all come into contact with foreign colleagues, international institutions and other cultures. To make Leiden students true global citizens, we stimulate international knowledge, global awareness and intercultural skills. We consider it extremely important to have a diverse student population on our campuses and to promote an international classroom. We encourage students to gain international experience during their studies, for example by taking electives or doing an internship at a foreign institution.
21st century skills
Good preparation for the job market is important for young academics. We therefore work together with the Student Career Service to ensure that our programmes focus on exploring the job market and developing skills and competences that students will need later in their career. To help meet these aims, we make good use of our network of alumni and employers. The University also trains students in the special skills known as 21st-century skills: the ability to work in a team, international and intercultural competences, entrepreneurship, leadership and digital skills.
