About

The unique geographic and temporal breadth of research at Leiden allows us to stimulate a shift from the classical Weberian mode of scholarly production that views historical development and modernization as emanating from Europe and the West to a multi-polar perspective that allows for more nuanced, connected and plural understandings of the world.

Research Aim

How does global change across time and space lead to convergence and loss of variation or increasing diversity and conflict?

Processes of globalization lead to convergence as well as divergence. Increasing globalization entails, in some periods and places, global homogenization, the rise of international institutions and conflict regulation, and a loss of cultural diversity. However, globalization also involves increasing differentiation, a growing awareness of diversity and otherness, and it may result in conflicts between encountering cultures representing different social values.

Research Approach

GI strives to cultivate research that includes:

  • Connections and comparisons between East, South, North and West

  • Interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary collaboration

  • Valorization through developing closer ties to Leiden museums

GI topics are concerned with studying:

  • Historicity of global interactions

  • Agency in processes of globalization

  • Assemblages resulting from global interactions

Current Themes supported by Global Interactions

  • Slavery and Labor Migration

  • Heritage and Diversity

  • Global Uses of Justice

While these areas represent particular thematic strengths of ongoing research at Leiden, they are not meant to define the limits and exclusive research interests of our group. Global Interactions is committed to remain open to any theme, topic or approach that enriches the study of various far-reaching and transformative interactions on a world scale.
