FAIR data

Open Science means not only sharing final research results but also the underlying data. A main way to do that is by making research data FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

As open as possible, as closed as necessary

Our university's Data Management Regulations — as well as many funders — require data to be FAIR, following the principle “as open as possible, as closed as necessary".

Various types of support are already in place to help researchers with FAIR data such as a university template for Data Management Plans and data stewards who can offer training and give advice.

Now we want to work on expanding our FAIR data activities through additional infrastructures, by including FAIR data in the reward and recognition process, and by taking steps which allow data to be FAIR for both humans and machines.

Ambitions:

  1. Strengthening data stewardship capacity within the faculties and institutes.
  2. Encouraging faculties and institutes to develop a FAIR data protocol.
  3. Developing the Leiden Digital Data Competence Centres as hubs to connect local, national and international infrastructures.
  4. Communicating FAIR practices during events, by ambassadors and by sharing good practices.
  5. Creating a data catalogue to make FAIR research data visible.
  6. Managing and monitoring FAIR data.
