Leiden University opened its doors in 1575 – the very first university in the Netherlands. The law faculty was involved from the start and so this year we, too, are celebrating our 450th anniversary. In the course of these 450 years, generations of students and legal scholars have sought to gain knowledge, achieve progress and bring about social change. See what we have in store throughout this special anniversary year.

Our faculty has a rich history. Last year, in honour of Leiden Law School’s 450th anniversary, a timeline describing our history in twelve key moments was officially unveiled in the Faculty Room at the Academy Building

The 450 Event Committee, led by Joanne van der Leun, is in charge of the content and coordination of the faculty’s anniversary programme. We’re putting the faculty’s in-house expertise and talents to full use in our programme of activities and events.

How are we celebrating our anniversary in 2025 on the faculty?

Leiden Law School is celebrating its 450th anniversary and we have lots of special events planned to showcase what our faculty has to offer. For example, a series of ‘450-talks’ to be held at a unique location in the KOG.
