Translating with confidence: Incorporating LLM suggestions in translation workflows

Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly reshaping numerous industries, with translation being no exception. Beyond merely generating automatic translations, LLMs can now detect errors, explain them and suggest corrections, opening up new ways for interaction between translators and automation. While these suggestions have been shown to be helpful for LLMs to correct translations, their true potential in supporting translators remains largely unexplored. Could LLM suggestions enhance productivity by helping translators edit machine-translated texts more quickly and efficiently? As MT outputs improve in quality, could such features assist translators in detecting errors, resulting in higher-quality translations? What is the optimal amount of information to best support translators without disrupting the editing process? How does translators’ confidence in themselves versus their confidence in AI evolve and what is the impact on their decision-making process? And do translators trust automatic suggestions more than human suggestions?
