Yindjibarndi visual artist, Ms Katie West, Dr. Corioli Souter (WA Museum Head of Maritime Heritage and maritime archaeologist) and Professor Susan Broomhall (Australian Catholic University) will come and visit the Faculty of Archaeology on the 17th of January 2025 at 13:00h.

They will explore with us the different understandings of the concept of shared histories, and ways of referencing VOC collections in museums, as well as other related cultural institutions in the Netherlands. They will present the results of their research up until now and would like to discuss these with students as well as academic staff.

Their visit is part of a larger project that was funded by the Australian Research Council - Mobilising Dutch East India Company collections for new global stories - and which also includes Dutch partners like the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE), the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Kaap Skil on Texel, the National Archives, the Dutch embassy in Australia and our own Faculty of Archaeology (maritime archaeology).

The ‘Shared Histories, Different Memories’ project-part has as a goal to establish with Aboriginal knowledge holders and artists culturally appropriate protocols to capture contemporary stories of Aboriginal and VOC/ Dutch East India Company contact, in particular the knowledge and experiences of women. With this the aim is to balance traditional historical narratives of VOC shipwrecks and create new perspectives.
