A new approach needs to be taken to recognizing and rewarding academics. The assessment system currently in use no longer fits in with the existing zeitgeist and the social role of academics. This is the clear message of the position paper “Room for everyone’s talent: towards a new balance in the recognition and rewards for academics”, prepared by the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (UNL), the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centres (NFU), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMW) launched in 2019. The paper is full of excellent ideas, which will bring about a major cultural change within academia.
Diversification of career paths, team science, quality over quantity, open science and stimulating leadership are the five pillars of this program. At all universities, local committees are breaking their heads over how to implement these ideas into practice. In this talk I will talk about best practices as an inspiration, will provide suggestions for implementation and would like to discuss with you what R&R can bring us and what hurdles you may see that need to be considered.
