SALTSWAT Project
SALTSWAT -- a project which combines the Spaces for Active Learning & Teaching and the Support wtih Active Teaching -- began in Mid-2019 and is running in pilot until the summer of 2020. The purpose of the project is to find answers to the question of how to systematically accelerate 'active teaching and learning' at Leiden University. 4 pilot groups have joined the project in the initiation phase. Read more about these groups below.
The project is a collaboration between Centre for Innovation, ICTO, ICLON, and UFB.
The collaborative structure of project is designed to provide support on both the spaces & pedagogy required for effective active learning.
Goals of the Pilot Program
To test how most effectively to support teachers and operationalise spaces for active learning. What needs to be supported by a network which spans the University, and what needs to be done differently in each faculty?
These groups were chosen after a call-out was distrubuted through all faculties in early 2019.
Bio Pharmaceutical Sciences (LACDR)
Challenges & Activities
Teaching in large lecture halls makes collaboration and team-based learning very impractical. What can be done to existing rooms to make them more suitable for active learning on limited budgets?
Physics (LION)
Challenges & Activities
Here there is a great room for active learning, but acquring skills in a different teaching style is not easy. How can we make the steps towards active learning methods in a time-efficient way?
Archaeology (various institutes)
Challenges & Activities
We have skills to make digital representations of fragile and rare objects. How can we integrate these into our teaching in an active way? What sort of room and technology is required to teach using 3D scans on a 2D plane?
Security Studies (ISGA), FGGA
Challenges & Activities
We are developing new courses and curricula, but not sure how we can make a cultural transistion towards more active learning. How do we prepare to deliver a new course or educational track in an active way?
