The Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH) invites applications for a PhD position as part of the FGw Starting grant “Intercultural Contact and Identity Formation in Premodern Frontier Zones”, led by principal investigators Dr. J.M.C. van den Bent and Dr. L.F. Kattenberg.
This project explores how cross-cultural contact in frontier zones forced individuals and communities to rethink identity, as shifting political, cultural, and military contexts redefined categories like self and other, ally and enemy. Examining premodern frontiers across Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas, it analyzes how these fluid identities shaped legal, political, and social outcomes, influencing freedom, status, and recognition.
