William Stewart and Jason Dittmer, winners of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy Article Award

We are excited to announce the winners of this year’s HJD Article Award:  William Stewart and Jason Dittmer with their 2023 article ‘More-than-Human Space Diplomacy: Assembling Internationalism in Orbit’, which is available in Open Access. The paper is based on William’s PhD and explores the role of materiality in space diplomacy through the example of orbital docking technology by tracing its evolution from the early days of the space age to the International Space Station — and beyond.

Praise by members of HJD Advisory Board on the award jury:

“This essay pushes the boundaries of our understanding of diplomacy – and of the field of Diplomatic Studies - by bringing ideas from assemblage thinking to the question of space diplomacy. The text is very well written and highly entertaining, and the empirics perfectly support the argument.”

“Original, thought-provoking, and well-researched. This study is meaningful for diplomatic practice as it reminds diplomats that infrastructural and material connections can be as relevant as human agency. The author’s conceptualisation of the ISS project as a diplomatic assemblage of human and non-human relations is theoretically innovative.”
