The Faculty of Science and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) is looking for:

2 Lecturer positions (0.6-1.0 FTE) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, and AI

The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) of the Faculty of Science, is looking for candidates for two Lecturer positions (0.6-1.0 FTE). These are teaching positions (“Docent 4”; or for lecturers with qualifications and a track record, “Docent 3”) in which we seek to appoint an expert in computer science and/or machine learning-related courses. The ideal candidate preferably holds or is close to obtaining a PhD in computer science/AI, or related relevant disciplines. Candidates with notable academic teaching experience without a PhD are also invited to apply.

Depending on the profile of and in consultation with the candidate, a precise assignment to courses will be made. Depending on the experience of the candidate, this may involve an independent teaching task, or a co-teaching setting in which the lecturer collaborates with a professor to teach a course. A course is always supported by a number of teaching assistants, depending on the number of students participating in the course. The lecturer may also get involved in thesis supervision. Teaching will be done in English.

The candidate will primarily be assigned to bachelor-level courses in the Bachelor Informatica (Computer Science) and/or the Bachelor Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, which are the two bachelor programmes of Leiden University’s artificial intelligence and computer science institute (LIACS). LIACS has a friendly and collaborative culture, you will feel at home quickly, and will be supported by colleagues in your teaching duties. We are in particular looking for a lecturer with experience and/or expertise in one or more of the following areas: Automata theory, Databases, Discrete Mathematics, Machine Learning.

    Key responsibilities

    • Teaching (independently or as co-lecturer) courses in the topics mentioned above (including giving lectures, managing teaching assistants, and grading exams)
    • Supervising a limited number of bachelor students
    • Serving as a proactive member of the institute’s teaching staff
    • Contributing to the innovation of course material, exercises, and exams

    Selection criteria

    • MSc degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or a closely related field
    • Proficiency in English
    • Team spirit and collaborative attitude
    • Preferably experience with managing digital learning environments
    • Willing to explore an academic career in teaching

    Terms and conditions
    We offer a position commensurate with your level of experience, initially for one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the research and personal compatibility, the appointment can be extended further to a permanent one.
    The salary ranges, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 3.226,- to € 5.090,- gross per month, following the pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
