Dr. Zakia Shiraz is Assistant Professor of Intelligence and Security. Her expertise lies in Latin American political history and security, and research connects the fields of Area Studies, International Security, and Intelligence Studies. In 2024, she was awarded a Starter Grant for her research on intelligence in the Global South. This project develops a new line of research in 'Regional Intelligence Studies' to examine the impact of shifts in governance and conflict dynamics on intelligence agencies in Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
Dr. Zakia Shiraz is Assistant Professor of Intelligence and Security. Her expertise lies in Latin American political history and security, and research connects the fields of Area Studies, International Security, and Intelligence Studies. She has published in International Affairs, International History Review, and Third World Quarterly.
Her current research examines the history of violent conflict and peace negotiations in Colombia. In 2024, she was awarded a Starter Grant for her research on intelligence in the Global South. This project develops a new line of research in 'Regional Intelligence Studies' to examine the impact of shifts in governance and conflict dynamics on intelligence agencies in Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
Zakia Shiraz is the promotor of the Honours College FGGA. She is part of the advisory committee for the Cambridge Review of International Affairs.
Zakia Shiraz completed her PhD in Politics and International Studies and held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Institute of Advanced Study and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies at the University of Warwick. Prior to joining Leiden University, she was a lecturer in International Politics at the University of Leicester.
