Profile

Wouter Hins has been a professor of Media Law at eLaw Center for Law and Digital Technologies since 2007. Until his retirement in 2018, his appointment was for two days a week. Simultaneously, he was an associate professor in Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Amsterdam. Wouter has many years of experience in handling administrative appeals, in particular with the Audiovisual Media Authority, the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Sport and the Dutch public broadcaster NPO.

Biography

Wouter Hins graduated as a LLM student at Leiden University in 1978. Next, he worked at the ministry of Culture in the Netherlands and at a local broadcasting station. In 1983, he became a lecturer in Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Amsterdam, where he wrote his PhD thesis on transborder television and fundamental rights. The thesis was finished in 1991.

In 2007, he was appointed professor of Media Law in Leiden on behalf of the Leids Universiteits Fonds.

Research and interests

Wouter is interested in all subjects adjacent to Media law: e.g. fundamental rights, the power of social media and administrative law. His research  focuses on the principles of freedom of speech and journalistic privileges, media policy and access to government information.
