A.P.A. (Ton) BROEDERS (MA, PhD) taught Phonetics and Linguistics at the Radboud University Nijmegen from 1972-1988, when he was asked to set up a forensic phonetics and linguistics facility at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) in Rijswijk (now The Hague). In 1996 he was appointed Head of the Department of Handwriting, Speech and Document Examination and from 2002 until 2006 he held the position of Chief Scientist at the NFI. He is a founder member and former Executive Committee member of IAFPA (International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics) and from 1998 to 2002 was the (first) chair of the ENFSI Expert Working Group for Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis
In 2003 he received his PhD from the University of Leiden for a dissertation entitled In Search of the Source: An Exploration of the Basic Principles of Criminalistics and the Evaluation of Forensic Evidence, for which he was awarded the Prof. A.E.J. Modderman Prize for criminal law dissertations in 2006. In 2004 he was appointed to the chair of Criminalistics at the University of Leiden. In 2007 he was also appointed Professor of Criminalistics at the University of Maastricht, where he helped set up the Maastricht University Forensic Institute. His publications deal with a variety of subjects ranging from forensic phonetics and linguistics to forensic science and the evaluation and interpretation of forensic evidence in general. He was Reporting Officer for the 13th and 14th Interpol Forensic Science Symposiums for the field of Forensic Acoustics and Linguistics in 2001 and 2004 and is a member of the editorial board of The International Journal of Speech, Language and the Law and Expertise en Recht.
