Curriculum vitae
Titia Loenen studied history and law at Leiden University. In 1992 she obtained her doctorate in law. Her PhD thesis was entitled ‘Verschil in Gelijkheid. De conceptualisering van het juridische gelijkheidsbeginsel met betrekking tot vrouwen en mannen in Nederland en de Verenigde Staten’ (Difference in Equality. The Conceptualisation of the Legal Principle of Equality as Regards Women and Men in the Netherlands and the United States).
After having been employed for many years at Utrecht University as Professor of Women’s Legal Studies and subsequently Professor of Legal Theory, she returned to Leiden University as Professor of Human Rights and Diversity in 2013. Here she designed and developed the Advanced LLM European and International Human Rights Law. Since 2014, she is Programme Coordinator of the research programme Effective Protection of Fundamental Rights in a Pluralist World.
Her research covers human rights, equality issues and international, European and national non-discrimination law in comparative perspective. The current focus is on gender and multicultural issues. Over the years she has published extensively in national and international journals. In 2004-2005 she participated in the global and multidisciplinary Fulbright New Century Program ‘Towards equality: The global empowerment of women’. Since 2016, she is a member of the Network of Legal Experts in gender equality and non-discrimination, which informs the European Commission on developments regarding this topic in all the EU Member States.
As a lecturer, she set up many courses on gender and law, equality, human rights, and pluralism.
In addition to teaching and research, she has been involved in a wide variety of management activities, including being Dean of PhD students, Research Director and Programme Coordinator of the Legal Research Master (UU) and more recently as Programme Director of the Advanced LLM European and International Human Rights Law and member of the research board.
Research focus
Equality in the perspective of international and comparative law, in particular with regard to gender, and cultural and religious diversity.
