Tim van Lit obtained his MSc in Criminal Justice at Leiden University in 2017 and consequently enlisted as an officer with the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (RNM). The RNM is the military police organization within the Dutch Armed Forces. In 2019 he finished his military and police training and graduated from the Royal Netherlands Military Academy and the RNM Training Center. Since 2019 the RNM has deployed Tim in the Netherlands and abroad.
His current research concerns the use of force by RNM officers, and how organizational factors, such as training, culture and leadership influence the individual discretionary decision to use force. His research is related to studies into policing styles, militarization, organizational socialization, and discretionary decision-making.
From a broader perspective, Tim is interested in issues relating to legitimacy, accountability, and ethics within the field of law, governance and society.
