Research
How do bilingual speakers perceive, produce, and lexically process the sounds of language, and why do they each do so in their unique, individual way? In my research, I use established procedures rooted in experimental phonetics to investigate how individual linguistic factors (such as language background), as well as extralinguistic factors (such as musicality or working memory) jointly shape individual differences in speech processing. Although I have primarily worked on individual variation in late second-language learners, recently I have started to investigate individual differences in speech processing in heritage speakers (such as heritage speakers of Brazilian Portuguese in Japan).
