Talha Gunay is a Meijers PhD candidate at the Europa Institute of Leiden Law School. His research concerns the judicial and administrative implications of the increased cooperation on return between the EU authorities (Frontex) and Member States under EU law.
Talha studied law at European Law School (LL.B.) in Maastricht and holds the LL.M. in Globalisation and Law from the same university, graduating Summa cum laude. He wrote his LL.M. thesis on the international responsibility of the European Union in the context of Frontex’s joint operations. During his studies, he worked as a student tutor in the international law course at UCM (University College Maastricht), and as a student assistant for Prof. Hildegard Schneider in the Horizon-2020 project, MIGNEX.
After graduation, he completed an internship at the Office of the Prosecutor in MICT (Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals). He later worked as a research assistant at Maastricht University in the MIGNEX project, and as a visiting fellow at CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies).
His research activities and interests include European migration and asylum law and policy, the EU’s accountability at its external borders under EU law and international law as well as the international obligations of state and non-state actors in migration management.
