Takuma is a JSPS Overseas Research Fellow at Leiden University and a Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan.
Professional experience
Takuma is a Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (Japan) and a JSPS Overseas Research Fellow at Leiden University (The Netherlands). Previously, he worked at the University of Cambridge (UK) and the University of Technology Sydney (Australia).
His research focuses on sustainable materials and energy systems, with particular emphasis on industrial decarbonisation and the responsible supply of critical materials. He addresses these topics by integrating traditional engineering principles with systems analysis methods, including material flow analysis, energy systems modelling, and life cycle assessment.
He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo (Japan) in 2021, where he won the Dean’s Award and was the first student in the department to complete the PhD program within a two-year timeframe.
Research topics
At CML, Takuma's research focuses on mapping global flows and stocks of steel, concrete, timber and chemical products. The project aims to identify scalable and timely decarbonisation options for these emission-intensive materials.
