Stijn Willem van ’t Land works as a researcher and PhD candidate for the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA). His doctoral research focuses on the cross-border impact of terrorist attacks, focusing specifically on the effects of terrorist attacks abroad on threats in the Netherlands.
About Stijn
Stijn’s doctoral research is part of the Close Protection and Surveillance (Dutch: Bewaken en Beveiligen) research project (2023 – 2027). The Dutch system of close protection and surveillance provides protective security to individuals in the face of threats from terrorism, organized crime, lone actors, or state actors. The Close Protection and Surveillance research project contributes to knowledge, quality improvement, and innovation of the system, involving key stakeholders such as the National Police, the Public Prosecution Service, the Netherlands Royal Marechaussee, the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism, and other related stakeholders in the security chain.
In June 2022, the National Expertise Centre for Surveillance and Protection (Dutch: Kenniscentrum Bewaken en Beveiligen) awarded a multi-year grant to Leiden University to develop new activities in research and training. The project involves short-term, practice-oriented research, long-term doctoral research, and contributes to training and education for professionals in the field of protective security.
