Simon started as a PhD researcher in the Industrial Ecology (IE) department of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) in April 2024, focusing on enhancing data generation and sharing practices using AI and simulation tools to enhance circular manufacturing processes.

Professional experience

Simon van Lierde earned his MSc in Industrial Ecology from Leiden University and TU Delft in 2024, where he specialized in Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His thesis involved creating a Python-based model to predict the environmental impacts of space cooling in The Hague.

Simon began his professional career at Metabolic in 2020 as a Consultant and Product Owner, developing data models in Excel and Python for circular strategies in the electronics and metals industries. His work included enhancing LCA databases, legislative research, and implementing automated sustainability reporting tools.

In 2023, Simon took on the role of Data Manager at the Dutch Environmental Database, focusing on the accuracy and optimization of environmental databases for the construction industry, and fostering sustainable construction practices with industry leaders and policymakers.

In April 2024, he began a PhD focusing on integrating artificial intelligence with simulation tools and traditional fieldwork to improve data collection and sharing for sustainable manufacturing.
