Professional experience

During his bachelor's degree at Leiden University College The Hague, Sebastiaan chose the major Earth, Energy and Sustainability. For his thesis research, he delved into the effect of recreation on the spatiotemporal pattern in animal observations. He continued with an MSc in Forest and Nature Management at Wageningen University & Research, specializing in animal ecology. He focused his thesis research on the African lion (Panthera leo) and its prey. In a mixed-use landscape, Sebastiaan investigated whether the densities of wild prey and livestock determined the spatial use of lions.

As a graduate ecologist, Sebastiaan first worked as a full-time journalist for Trouw and Investico, among others. He now divides his time between ecological research, journalism and science communication.

Research topic

In his PhD research, Sebastiaan quantifies the cumulative effect of light and sound pollution. Animals are increasingly confronted with these sensory forms of pollution. Sebastiaan investigates how the behavior of animals changes due to the interplay of light and sound.
