My PhD-research, is titled ‘Racialized Identities. Community Formation and Slave Ancestry in the Creolizing Suburbs of Colombo in the late 18th and early 19th century’. This research is part of a larger NWO funded project on Forgotten Lineages: Afterlives of Dutch Slavery in the Indian Ocean World.

Racialized Identities seeks to explore the fading of slave ancestry in the city and suburbs of Colombo, amidst other forms of belonging based on ‘racial’, religious and occupational affiliations, when Sri Lanka transitioned from Dutch to British power in the late 18th and early 19th century.
