Rutger Hagen is a lecturer at the Institute of Political Science.
Dr. Rutger Hagen is lecturer at the Institute of Political Science. He specialises in Global Collective Action with a research interest in Global Commons and Global Public Goods.
He studied Public Administration specializing in European Governance at Leiden University and received his PhD in Political Economy from the KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2021 after defending his thesis titled Understanding the Provision of Global Public Goods. His research proposal was awarded with a scholarship from the Research Foundation – Flanders.
Before joining Leiden University’s Institute of Political Science he worked as a researcher at the Centre for Global Governance Studies. This is an interdisciplinary research centre of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the KU Leuven. This Centre of Excellence was set up to promote, support and carry out high-quality international, innovative and interdisciplinary research on global governance. In addition to its fundamental research activities the Centre carries out independent applied research and offers innovative policy advice and solutions to policy-makers on multilateral governance and global public policy issues. He also had research stays at Stanford University and the University of Konstanz.
His work focuses on global collective action by developing game theoretical models, which he tests using quantitative and qualitative methods in areas such as climate mitigation, asylum provisions and internet censorship.
Teaching
He teaches courses in approaches and methods used in political science, academic skills and statistics. He supervises theses of BSc and MSc students with an interest in collective action or related fields.
His other competencies lie in policy evaluation, editing, speech writing, grant applications and organising academic events.
