Research

Gerritsen's research focuses on cognitive enhancement by means of meditation, mindfulness or other contemplative practices. He is specifically interested by what mechanisms these multi-modal interventions produce their effects on body and mind. Currently, we have zoomed in on a single aspect: breathing. How do respiratory patterns influence the (para)sympathetic nervous system? Do these produce changes in cognitive functioning, both in the short and long term?
Though most of his studies dive into this new and exciting topic, research projects with other mind-body exercises such as tai chi chuan or yoga, also hold his interest. He is always up for research collaborations across domains and supervising thesis projects in a wide area around my expertise.

Other academic interests of Gerritsen include:
•    consciousness and phenomenology
•    philosophy of mind and science
•    creativity
•    behavioural genetics
•    evolutionary cognition and ethology
•    cognitive science of religion
•    cultural psychology
•    behavioural economics
