Rachel Fletcher is a postdoctoral researcher on the ERC-funded project Early Medieval English in Nineteenth-Century Europe (EMERGENCE), focusing on networks of scholarly correspondence between nineteenth-century scholars of Old English. She also teaches Old English and medieval studies at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS).
Her background is in medieval studies and linguistics, and she has a particular interest in the history of lexicography. Her PhD thesis (University of Glasgow, 2021), titled 'Pushing the boundary: the periodisation problem in dictionaries of Old English', examined the construction of Old English as a linguistic period in dictionaries from the seventeenth century to the present day. She has published on the history of Old English studies, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and Old English medievalism.
