Victims at the Crossroads
Pauline Aarten is assistant professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs. She obtained her PhD in Criminology by studying suspended sentences in the Netherlands. Since then her focus has broadened to the study of crime and victimisation of severe offenses. Her research interests include severe violent crimes, victim-offender overlap, justice experiences and sentencing.
In 2014 she obtained her PhD in Criminology by studying suspended sentences in the Netherlands. Her PhD was the result of a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute of Crime and Law Enforcement (the NSCR) and VU University Amsterdam.
From 2014 to 2017 she worked at the International Victimology Institute Tilburg (INTERVICT), Tilburg University. There she did extensive research into the (justice) experience of victims of violent crime. She was one of the investigators on a European project concerning the victimology of radicalization. She was also involved in a project into the experiences with the aftermath of large scale conflict and its international reparative justice procedures in Cambodia, Congo, Cyprus and Suriname. She was recently awarded a grant from the Achmea Victims and Society Fund to examine the life stories of victims of severe traffic accidents, and their experience with justice systems.
In 2017 she started working at ISGA where she is involved in the homicide project lead by dr. Marieke Liem. Specially, Aarten looks into the victim-offender overlap and juvenile homicide and victimisation. She is also involved in teaching for the Master Crisis and Security Management and teaches the Research Method courses for the Bachelor Security Studies.
