Fields of interest

My research centers on war, with a particular focus on successional conflict, in 17th- and 18th-century Indonesia.

Research

My research examines the use of military force to seize power in late 17th- and early 18th-century Java, focusing on the role of violence in political conflicts and the interplay between ethics and aesthetics in warfare. It delves into the power struggle of Sunan Pakubuwana I of Mataram (reigning 1704-1719), particularly during the first and second succession attempts (1677-1706), exploring themes such as negotiation, gift-giving, deception, strategy, tactics, weaponry, the impact on civilians, and the definition of victory and defeat.

CV

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Indonesian History from the Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Following my undergraduate studies, I was awarded a scholarship to pursue intensive French at the Institut Français d'Indonésie (IFI) in Yogyakarta, where I achieved a B2 level. I then completed my first Master's (M.Sc.) in Strategic Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, and my second Master's (M.A.) in Colonial and Global History at the Institute for History, Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University. I have been affiliated with the Indonesia Programme at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies (IDSS), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam. Currently, I serve as a teaching staff member in the Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
