Research
My research focuses on the emergence and sensorial impact of the so-called Second Style frescoes of Roman domestic dwellings of the first century BCE. Famous for their depictions of perspectival illusionism and Hellenistic architectural features, the paintings also began to include a wide array of objects that circulated in the Hellenistic world and were imported into Rome. The Roman republic had become a pivotal player in this oikouménē while it had continued to expand significantly through conquest. By using New Materialist and cognitive approaches such as assemblage thinking and situated cognition, I aim to explore how these murals are part of a process of globalisation and helped the viewer to come to grips with this new social reality, enacted by the senses.
