Nethmi Sewwandi is a PhD researcher at the Industrial Ecology department of CML since May 2023. Nethmi’s research focuses on hydrogen economy and it’s economic, environmental, and social impacts.
Professional experience
Nethmi graduated with a Bachelor in economics and an MSc in Environmental Engineering from University of Ulsan, South Korea. For her MSc thesis, Nethmi analysed the macro-economic data of developed economies using data envelopment and decoupling techniques. During her time at the master’s, she worked on numerous projects such as, policy recommendations for the circular economy and eco-industrial parks in Colombia which was led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the development of new CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage) process technology to reduce carbon-dioxide as a by-product of chemical processes which was led by the University of Ulsan. In addition, she also worked with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology on experiments for Water Environment information System in South Korea.
Research topic
Nethmi will be involved in the green hydrogen and circular bio-coal from biowaste for cost-competitive sustainable steel project that will contribute to the EU green hydrogen economy and to the decarbonization of the European steel sector. She will be working on environmental, social and economic assessment of H2 steel system using Life Cycle Assessment and Environmentally Extended Input Output Analysis and Social Life Cycle Assessment.
