Mojan Samadi is an assistant professor of criminal law and procedure, conducting research on the intersection between criminal law and human rights law. After graduating from the University of Amsterdam in Criminal Law and Public International Law (2010) and briefly working at the Lebanon Tribunal and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, Mojan Samadi started her academic career at Leiden University’s Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology by embarking on a PhD-research in October 2012. In her dissertation she created taxonomies of the rules governing the conduct of police and prosecution in criminal proceedings and examined to what extent non-compliance is and should be reprimanded. In her research she combined normative legal with qualitative research methods.
Her current research is on focuses on the gender-based violence against women and more generally gender inequality within criminal justice.
In the past years she has been a visiting researcher at Zurich University’s criminal law department, the University of Helsinki’s Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. Furthermore she served on the board of editors of Ars Aequi (2013-2016) and currently serves on the board of editors of Boom Strafblad. Since 2022 she has been a deputy judge at the District Court of Amsterdam.
