Research
Major depressive disorder is a common and disabling illness, which is usually treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as for instance Prozac. However, it may take up to 8 weeks before a clinician may decide whether the treatment works or not. This long latency of SSRI treatment effects has led to the urge to find new, fast-acting, antidepressants.
In this line of research a multidisciplinary approach is used to investigate alternative antidepressants. We make use of various methods such as behavioural testing, pharmacological manipulations, (functional) Magnetic Resonance Imaging and combinations of these techniques to get more insight in the mechanisms underlying the antidepressant effects of alternative medications.
