Marleen Barth graduated with an honours degree in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam in 1989. After graduating she started working as a political editor at Trouw, a national daily. Between 1998 and 2002 she was a MP for the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) in the House of Commons. In 2004 she became the chair of the Dutch Christian Teachers Union. Between 2008 and 2013 she served as chair of the Dutch Association of Mental Health Institutions. From 2011 until 2018 she was the floorleader of the PvdA in the Senate. She now works als a member of several Supervisiory Boards in health care, a university of applied science and a pensionfund.
