Biography
Mark Overhand was born on September 14th 1964 in Rotterdam. From 1982-1986 Mark started his studies in chemistry at the van ‘t Hoff Instituut in Rotterdam. During this period he was an intern at the Technical University of Delft were he was initiated in the art of organic chemistry in the group of Leen Maat (supervisors: Jan Linders en Joop Lie). His thesis describing the multi-step synthesis of a morphine analog was rewarded with the golden spatula by the KNCV. Mark then decided to study chemistry at Leiden University (1986-1989). In this city he performed higher sugar chemistry in the group of Prof. Van Boom under the direct supervision of Geert-Jan Boons and Gijs van der Marel. Subsequently, he went to Charlottesville, Virginia where he received his Ph.D. under the directions of Prof. Hecht (1990-1994). Thereafter, Mark moved back to the old world where he was a post-doctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Seebach at the ETH in Zürich (1995-1996). Currently, he is back in the old nest in Leiden as an associate professor.
