Dr Mamadou Hébié is Associate Professor of International Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies.
Dr Mamadou Hébié is since May 2021 Associate Professor of International Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, having first joined the Faculty as Assistant Professor in 2016.
Before rejoining Leiden University as Associate Professor, Dr Hébié served between March 2018 and March 2021 as Legal Officer, Special Assistant to the President of the International Court of Justice, His Excellency Judge Abdulqawi A. Yusuf. He also served as Lecturer at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, in the Master in International Dispute Settlement programme (MIDS) from 2013 to 2016.
Dr Mamadou Hébié holds a PhD, summa cum laude, avec les félicitations du jury, and a Diploma in Advanced Studies - Specialisation international law, from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. He also graduated from Harvard Law School and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. He is a recipient of the Diplomas of The Hague Academy of International Law and the International Institute of Human Rights. Mamadou’s PhD thesis on ‘Les accords conclus entre les puissances coloniales et les entités politiques locales comme moyens d'acquisition de la souveraineté territoriale’ won in 2016 the Paul Guggenheim Prize in International Law that is awarded every couple of years to a ‘PhD thesis in public international law characterized by its exceptional quality which is the first outstanding work of a young author at the beginning of his or her career’.
A general international lawyer and practitioner, Dr Hébié’s areas of interest include international dispute settlement, especially territorial and maritime boundary disputes, together with their relating natural resources disputes, international investment law, and international humanitarian law and human rights.
