Biography
Liesbeth Claes is an assistant professor of Ancient History at Leiden University and holds the numismatic chair in the Teyler’s Second Society.
After her MA Ancient History and MA Cultural History at the University of Leuven (Belgium), she obtained her PhD in Ancient History at the Radboud University Nijmegen (2013). In the course of her doctoral studies she was a visiting scholar at Corpus Christi College, Oxford (September- December 2009) and at the University of California, Berkeley (March - June 2011). After defending her doctoral thesis “Kinship and Coinage: Ancestors and Family on Roman Imperial Coinage during the Principate” she obtained the scholarship “van Gelderbeurs” of the Money Museum at Utrecht.
Since September 2013, she has been a university lecturer at the History Department of the University of Leiden. Her research focuses on coin hoards and the circulation of coins during the Roman Empire, through which she has built a particular research experience for the Lower Countries and collaborates with the Oxford-based Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire project. Recently, she has started a smaller numismatic project in collaboration with the German-Dutch Limes Society (NSL) with the aim to get a better knowledge about the alleged “limesfall” in the Netherlands during the 3th century.
Research interests
Her research interests are focused on Imperial Rome, with a special focus on the Roman (monetary) institutions, the representation of power, and the Roman legions. Geographically, the scope of her research is focused on the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire. Her main research specialism is ancient numismatics in which coin circulation, messaging and coin hoards take a special place. Other areas of interest include the Roman familia, Roman law and the history of the academic research and education.
