Joris (J.I.) Rotmans is professor of Internal Medicine and head of the subdepartment of Nephrology at LUMC. In addition, he is president-elect of the Vascular Access Society, chair of the thematic group focused on vascular tissue engineering at TERMIS, member of guideline committee of the Dutch Federation of Nephrology and member of the expert panel Medical devices en in vitro diagnostics van de European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Academic career

Joris (JI) Rotmans, MD, PhD, is professor of Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center. He received his MD degree at the Free University in Amsterdam in 2000 and his PhD degree at Amsterdam University in 2004. The title of his thesis was ‘Therapeutic strategies to prevent stenosis in arteriovenous grafts for hemodialysis’. He completed his residency in internal medicine and Nephrology at the Amsterdam Medical Center and the Leiden University Medical Center. In 2008, he moved to Brisbane, Australia for postdoctoral research on vascular tissue engineering at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Since 2011, he is faculty member at the Department of Internal Medicine of Leiden University Medical Center. From 2018 up tot 2022, he was the chairman of the Nephrology Residency Program at LUMC.  Since 2021 he serves a head of the subdepartment of Nephrology.

His main research interest has been in the area of nephrology and vascular medicine, with a focus on vascular access for hemodialysis.
