Jorieke Manenschijn studied both law and philosophy in Nijmegen and Leiden. She joined the Department of Jurisprudence as a lecturer and researcher in October 2020.

Jorieke is writing her dissertation on militant constitutionalism. In her dissertation, she shows how various countries are experiencing democratic backsliding due to attacks from within. This is happening both in new democracies and in more established democracies. Many people turn to militant democracy to find ways to counter this backsliding. However, Jorieke argues that the concept of militant democracy and its instruments are not capable of withstanding such a legal revolution. Therefore, we should shift our focus towards militant constitutionalism. In the final part of the dissertation, the first concept of a theory of militant constitutionalism will be introduced. This will be done based on a case study of the current developments in the United Kingdom, and a study of the more abstract theories surrounding constitutionalism and unconstitutional constitutional amendments. Besides conducting research, Jorieke also teaches both bachelor’s and master’s courses and participates in the teaching committees of the bachelor’s programme in law.

Before starting as a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Jurisprudence, Jorieke worked as a junior lecturer at Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam. She has also worked as a legal and financial employee at a startup and business collective where she still provides small business owners with legal advice.
