Jonathan Huijts studied Dutch law at Maastricht University. During his stay in Maastricht he participated in the ‘MaRBLe for excellence’ honoursprogramme. In the context of this programme Jonathan performed empirical research into the effects of Dutch civil appeal. He also worked at the Infopunt Schade A2 Maastricht, a legal consulting bureau specialized in the damage caused by the tunneling of the A2-highway at Maastricht. A substantial part of the given counsel focused on ‘nadeelcompensatie’ (a form of governmental damage compensation based on the égalité-principle).

After his graduation Jonathan became a lecturer at Maastricht University, where he worked for several years. He taught courses concerning legal skills and Constitutional & Administrative law. Furthermore he did research for a PhD-thesis about the differences and similarities between several important nadeelcompensatie-regulations. Nowadays Jonathan is a lecturer in Constitutional and Administrative Law at Leiden University.
