Jolanda Snel is a PhD candidate at the Lifestyle Brain Interaction research group in the Cognitive Psychology unit. Her research is focused on the influence of ketogenic interventions in brain health, particularly related to autism and neurodegenerative diseases.

Ketogenetic interventions for brain health

Jolanda Snel is a PhD candidate specialising in ketogenic interventions for brain health, while also operating a private neuropsychology practice in Doorn. Her primary research focuses on the ketogenic diet's applications in autism and neurodegenerative diseases. She is also dedicated to developing methods to translate the wealth of worldwide individual experiences with ketogenic diets—often undertaken independently—into meaningful insights for scientific and practical applications.

Jolanda earned her degree in neuropsychology from Utrecht University in 2011. After this, she gained extensive experience in elderly care and specialised mental health services, complementing her expertise with various additional trainings. Since 2015, she has run her own practice in Doorn, where her work bridges the often-overlooked connection between the psyche and the body in contemporary mental healthcare.

Her interest in the influence of nutrition and lifestyle on brain health and well-being deepened through her own transformative experiences with dietary changes. In her professional life, she frequently observes the gap between rigorous scientific inquiry and the practical realities of human health. Recognizing that neither analytical science nor pragmatic practice is sufficient in isolation, Jolanda thrives on integrating both worlds to deliver meaningful results.

This passion fuels her PhD research at Leiden University, where she aims to bridge that gap between science and practice. Her research embodies her curiosity and determination, which she sometimes describes as being "curious to the point of being annoying"—qualities that drive her innovative approach.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Jolanda enjoys connecting with nature and engaging in a variety of physical activities. Whether exploring on motorbikes, old-timers, or 4WD vehicles, horseback riding, or tackling DIY projects, she finds joy in movement and creativity. She also enjoys drawing, painting, reading, and occasionally daydreaming amidst the serene landscapes of Doorn. Jolanda lives with her 17-year-old daughter in this charming village on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a setting that inspires both her personal and professional life.
