Johanna C. Kardux (PhD Cornell University) teaches American literature and culture at Leiden University and is currently chair of the MA programme in North American Studies, as well as coordinator of the minor programme in American Studies. Her current research interests focus on memory and trauma studies, particularly the memorialization of slavery in transatlantic perspective; immigration literature; and post-9/11 literature, film and memorial culture. 

She has been a member of The Society for Multi-Ethnic Studies: Europe and the Americas (MESEA)since its founding in Heidelberg in 1998 and has been (elected) Vice-President of MESEA since 2012, after earlier being a Board member in different capacities (Advisory Board 2004-2008; Treasurer 2008-2012). In 2008 she organized a major international MESEA conference in Leiden on “Migration Matters: Immigration, Homelands, and Border Crossings.”  Currently she is leading an international research network that is organizing an international conference on the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, which will be held at Leiden in 2020:  “Four-Nation Commemoration:  The Mayflower and the Construction and Politics of Public Memory.” She is a member of the Editorial Board of peer-reviewed journal Atlantic Studies: Global Currents and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Transnational American Studies.
