Treatment of patients with hematological cancers including leukemia and lymphoma can be improved by targeting the immune system towards the malignant cells. Replacement of the blood cell compartment of the patient by donor stem cell transplantation allows the specific treatment of patients with donor derived immune cells. By characterization of target structures that can be recognized on the cancer cells and the generation of appropriate immune responses, new therapies will be developed.

The title of his inaugural lecture was 'Immunotherapie en de vertaalslag in de medische wetenschap'.
