Josephine graduated in Archaeology at the University of Reading, and was later Assistant Editor of the journal, Current Anthropology. She went on to a long career in publishing, at Oxford University Press, Academic Press, Taylor & Francis, and Brill. Turning to university administration, she was a Departmental Secretary at the Free University Amsterdam before coming to Leiden.
