The interests of Jelle Kaastra lie within X-ray spectroscopy of active galactic nuclei (AGN’s), galaxy clusters and the intergalactic and interstellar medium.

Kaastra is principal investigator of the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) of the XMM-Newton, ESA's X-ray multi-mirror mission, and the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (LETGS) from Chandra, NASA's mission for X-ray astronomy. He is also part of the advisory board of ASTRO-H, the new satellite of JAXA for X-ray astronomy.
