Jan Crijns (1978) is Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Institute  of Criminal Law and Criminology of Leiden University. From 15 February 2024, he holds the position of Vice Dean of Leiden Law School.

Jan Crijns (1978) is Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology of Leiden University, of which he is the Academic Director. He is also a research fellow in the research programme Criminal Justice: Legitimacy, Accountability and Effectivity.   

Jan Crijns was awarded his PhD degree (cum laude) on 17 June 2010. His dissertation is entitled 'De strafrechtelijke overeenkomst. De rechtsbetrekking met het Openbaar Ministerie op het grensvlak van publiek- en privaatrecht' (The Criminal Contract. The Legal Relationship with the Public Prosecutor in the Interface of Public and Private law).  

He frequently publishes on various aspects of criminal (procedural) law (see the publications tab), focusing in particular on truth-finding in criminal cases and on the relationship between criminal and administrative enforcement. Jan Crijns is also a member of the editorial board of Tekst & Commentaar Strafrecht and Strafvordering, the Wolters Kluwer College Bundel, the scientific journal Boom Strafblad and the online platform Modernisering Strafvordering. He is also a permanent author of Ars Aequi KwartaalSignaal and European Human Rights Cases Updates. Finally, he is a substitute judge at the Court of Appeal in The Hague, a member of the Toetsingscommissie hoge transacties and chairman of the Prof. A.E.J. Moddermanstichting.
