More information about Ilse Ras
Education
After a BA inLiberal Arts and Sciences at UCR (UU, Middelburg), majoring in Social Sciences and minoring in Rhetoric, and an MSc in Criminology at the University of Leicester (UK), Ilse completed her PhD research at the University of Leeds (UK). She examined British newspaper reporting on corporate fraud, using techniques from corpus linguistics in addition to critical discourse analysis.
Career
Prior to returning to the Netherlands, Ilse taught Criminology and (Critical) Stylistics at several British universities, including Oxford Brookes and Kingston University London. She also worked as a researcher at the University of Leeds (UK), studying newspaper reporting on human trafficking and corporate statements written following s54 of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015.
Research
Ilse's work is part of the Criminal Justice programme of the Department of Criminology, specifically the themes:'Vulnerable groups and inequality' and 'Tackling subversive financial and economic crime'. She addresses the questions 'how does (Dutch) society understand the human trafficking phenomenon, how does it communicate about it, and how does this affect policy (and vice versa)?'. She uses various qualitative research methods, primarily content and discourse analysis, enhanced through, where needed, methods from corpus linguistics. Her research interests lie primarily with labour exploitation.
Teaching
Ilse teaches in the BSc Criminology, focusing on methods (Practicum Verklarende Criminologie, Onderzoeksvaardigheden). As Bachelor Coordinator she is also involved in the (re)development of the qualitative methods modules in the new Criminology curriculum.
Ilse also teaches Evaluation of Criminal Policy in the MSc Veiligheidsbeleid.
