Since 2012, Hanneke Palmen works as Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology. After graduating in Developmental Psychology at Utrecht University, she received her Ph.D. in 2009 at the Education and Pedagogy Department of Utrecht University. From 2009-2012 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Netherlands Institute on Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) in Amsterdam, where she was involved in the TransAM project, a longitudinal panel study among emerging adults.
Research
Hanneke’s research interests focus on the social context of criminal behavior.
Hanneke is a senior researcher within the LIC study (Life in Custody-study), carried out for the Custodial Institutions Agency of the Ministry of Safety and Justice. This survey-study aims to map the relation between work climate of prison employees and living climate of detainees, as well as the consequences of the work-and living climate for detainees during and after detention in all Dutch prisons. Hanneke is co-promotor of Maria Berghuis’ PhD project: “Breaking down the barriers to prison visitation: a study on the determinants and consequences of prison visitation in the Netherlands”
Hanneke is also working within the Prison Project, in which her research concentrates on the role the social context (networks) plays in prisoner’s life before, during and after detention. Within this project she is co-promotor of Maaike Wensveen’s PhD- project: “The effects of imprisonment on living situations of (ex)-detainees”.
Teaching
Hanneke coordinates courses in the Criminology bachelor’s program (e.g., Research Methods and Statistics (BA1)), and supervises master students with their thesis. She is Coordinator of the Bachelor Program and takes part in the Education Committee of the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology. Hanneke is also member of the Advisory Board of the Criminological Network Netherlands (CNN).
