Zhou investigates the whole process of in situ detection of nanoplastics on single-cell toxicological evolution by electrochemical sensors.
Professional experience
Zhou graduated from Minnan Normal University in June 2016 with a master's degree in Analytical Chemistry, and during his master's study, his main research interests were in the preparation of in-situ nitrogen-doped carbon-based composites. He graduated from Jiangnan University in August 2020 with a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology, and his main research interests were in the preparation of carbon-based electrodes and the construction of miniaturised electrochemical sensors. In April 2021, Zhou is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for postdoctoral research at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, focusing on the development of techniques for coupling electrochemistry and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), and in September 2024 he joined the CML as a postdoctoral researcher.
Research topic
Zhou investigates electrochemical sensors for in situ monitoring of the whole process by which nanoplastics of different materials, particle sizes, and functionalizations cause toxic responses in single cells. His research aims to help understand the potential impact of nanoplastic exposure on people's health and ecosystems. Zhou's postdoctoral project was funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under the European Union's Horizon 2021-2027 research and innovation framework.
